Omega Oils - research regarding Alzheimer's / Dementia
"Omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish have been shown
to boost brain functioning as well as cutting the risk of
stroke"
"eating fish regularly appears to protect the brain as
people age, the six-year study of Chicago residents
said."
"The rate of (mental) decline was reduced by 10 percent
to 13 percent per year among persons who consumed
one or more fish meals per week compared with those
with less than weekly consumption," wrote Martha Clare
Morris of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago."
Healthy & Interesting Notes
FLOSS DAILY
In a study of 100 pairs of twins, Swedish and American researchers
found that those who had lost many teeth because of gum diease
were four times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s. Bacteria from the
mouth may cause chronic inflammation, which could impede blood
flow to the brain.
Anti-Diabetes Ally: D
Getting adequate vitamin D daily in food and supplements may help
stop type II diabetes, say Tufts University researchers. In their 20-year
study of 81,700 women, those with the highest vitamin D intake had a
28% lower risk of type II diabetes than those with the lowest. Good
food sources: milk, fatty fish, and eggs.
HOT NEW DIET FOOD:
To avoid the near coma that often follows Thanksgiving, start with a
glass of tomato juice spiked with hot red-pepper either dissolved in
tomato juice or as capsules swallowed with tomato juice, or a
placebo, 30 minutes before meals. They found that subjects ate 10 to
16% less after consuming red pepper wither in or with tomato juice
than after taking the placebo. Hot pepper stimulates nerves in the
mouth as well as in the stomach, the scientists think, making you feel
satisfied with less food.
BURGERS, BURGERS EVERYWHERE!
Worldwide, McDonald’s has now sold more than 100 billion
hamburgers. Emory University researchers calculated that by
choosing beef burgers instead of 100 billion McVeggie burgers,
customers are:
550 million more pounds saturated fat
1.2 billion more pounds of total fat
1 billion fewer pounds of fiber
660 million fewer pounds of protein
Next time you go to McDonalds (if you must) think about these
statistics and order a McVeggie or a salad with dressing on the side!
TART HEART SAVERS
Cranberries are packed with antioxidant polyphenols, which promote
healthy blood flow. University of Wisconsin-Madison experts tested
cranberries on pigs (whose blood vessels are similar to ours) that
had been bread to develop constricted arteries. After 6 months, blood
vessels of those fed cranberries were as stretchy as normal pigs’. Up
your polyphenol intake with cranberries, chocolate, strawberries,
pomegranates, and black and green teas.
